COUNTER-ARCHITECTURE #4
Re-constructing Reality

Counter-architecture is a collaborative research-project taking place between September of 2020 and January of 2021 — four performative actions, four talks and four debates that will result in a green paper, in the year where Lisbon is the European Green Capital, aimed to think the future of what we call “urbanity”.

Logic/Absurd

In its perception of reality, the organization of each society reveals the logic of what it rejects by considering it simply “unthinkable”. Thus it defines the limits of what its members can or cannot do in the different realms of social life. The unthinkable and the inconceivable are "spontaneously" rejected by the dominant culture. Here, the scope of what is understood as “different” is also established, based on the generalization of the opposite categories of “logic” and “absurd”. The “rational” is then replaced by the “cultural”. In “tolerant” societies, the difference is considered a mere curiosity. In “intolerant” societies, the difference becomes a “threat”. The implication of Architecture in this process will always be obvious and therefore, it is not surprising that its value-system is conditioned by this phenomenon.
