Lightopia

Lightopia is an exhibition of the Vitra Design Museum, developed in partnership with the EDP Foundation. The exhibition was shown at the Vitra Design Museum’s main building, in Weil am Rhein, in Germany, in Espace Fondation EDF, in Paris, at the Design Museum Gent, in Belgium, and at the MARCO — Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, in Monterrey, Mexico.

A narrative of light throughout time showcasing examples of its usage and reinvention the domains of art, design, architecture and other areas, Lightopia is organised around art and design works that illustrate light’s relation with art and design (and the technologies associated to them), from its earliest representations right up to the most futuristic tendencies.

The exhibition, enunciated through four parts — Living in Lightopia; Drawing and Light Icons; Colour, Space and Movement and Light in the Future —, gathered over 300 works, including iconic pieces from the Vitra’s collection, signed by designers such as Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Achille Castiglioni, Gino Sarfatti or Ingo Maurer, as well as works by relevant contemporary artists such as Carlos Cruz-Diez, Olafur Eliasson, Troika, Chris Fraser, Daan Roosegaarde or Joris Laarman, among many others.
