Clouds
João Pimenta Gomes
The EDP Foundation and maat – museum of Art, Architecture and Technology present Clouds, a sound installation by artist João Pimenta Gomes, at the Gallery of the Portuguese Embassy in Berlin.
Clouds is a sound composition and installation specifically created for the space of the Gallery of the Portuguese Embassy in Berlin (Kunstraum Botschaft). This piece is based on a sequence of existing rhythms, recordings and samples from the music world which, in turn, are constructed and deconstructed in a composition that appears to follow a score only known to the artist. It is an exhibition about music and its infinite possibilities and mutations in space.
This artist’s practice combines music, video and photography, while interconnecting references primarily linked to music. He explores the relationships between space, light and music by manipulating modular synthesizers, images and objects, thus providing immersive experiences and a unique encounter between analogue and digital, sensorial and conceptual.
I change something every time someone else comes in, I change directions. Because the public is a part of the music too; If somebody comes in, the acoustic changes. The music goes all the way around them and then comes back, so I can hear it. – Sun Ra
This sound installation will be accompanied by a set of performances to be carried out by the artist during opening week.
This is the sixth year of a partnership between the EDP Foundation/maat and the Portuguese Embassy in Germany, presenting the work of young Portuguese artists to the German capital every year at Berlin Gallery Weekend. After hosting solo shows by André Romão, Nuno da Luz, Igor Jesus, Ana Guedes and Teatro Praga, the EDP Foundation and the Portuguese Embassy in Germany continue to reaffirm their support of Portuguese contemporary art and to promote it internationally.
