I am not done yet
By Catarina Neves
When an artist is appreciated for the work they present and not for the fact that they create art despite their mental illness, this means that the Manicómio project is achieving what they set out to do: acknowledgement for the quality of their work beyond the stigma.
For six months, in 2021, the artists at Manicómio, in Beato, in Lisbon, were filmed creating pieces of art that are part of exhibitions and have entered the market like any other artistic object by any other artist who was not diagnosed with mental illness.
Far beyond the provocation of the concept, the documentary shows how the possibility of breaking barriers, of thinking and acting without filters is real in the Manicómio created by Sandro Resende and José Azevedo, as long as there is capacity, will to work, and talent.
