EDP Foundation Art Collection in Vila Nova da Barquinha
From 8 June to 14 September 2024, Galeria do Parque in Vila Nova da Barquinha will host the exhibition ‘PAINTING. PROVOCATION,’ bringing together a number of works from the EDP Foundation Art Collection and inviting the public to discover the diversity of the artistic practice of painting. Represented artists include Adriana Proganó, Álvaro Lapa, Eduardo Batarda, Gabriel Abrantes, Horácio Frutuoso, João Marçal, José Almeida Pereira, José Loureiro, Maria Beatriz, Mariana Gomes, René Tavares, Sara Chang Yan, and Tiago Baptista.
This exhibition marks the beginning of a new three-year protocol between the EDP Foundation and the Council of Vila Nova da Barquinha to organise an annual exhibition of part of the EDP Foundation Art Collection in the municipality.
The EDP Foundation has been developing its collaboration with the municipality since 2011, when it began to curate and partially fund the Almourol Contemporary Sculpture Park, one of the most notable examples of public art in the country, featuring 11 of the most important national sculptors with works developed from the 1960s to the present day. The project has featured artists such as Alberto Carneiro, Ângela Ferreira, Carlos Nogueira, Cristina Ataíde, Fernanda Fragateiro, Joana Vasconcelos, José Pedro Croft, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Rui Chafes, Xana, and Zulmiro de Carvalho.
The Almourol Contemporary Sculpture Park opened to the public in 2012, with the EDP Foundation collaborating on an ongoing basis in curating exhibitions in the Sculpture Park's Gallery, selecting artists for Summer Residencies, and including local civil parishes into the EDP Foundation Public Art Programme.
