Continuing its partnership with the EDP Foundation, the Municipal Gallery in Porto presents Of Other Spaces, the sixth exhibition in the series “Perspectives”, in which the MAAT — Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology has been offering themed approaches to the EDP Foundation Art Collection.
This exhibition took its title from an important essay by Michel Foucault and it explored the notions of space imagined and developed by visual artists. In contrast with the definitions of space which stem both from scientific or technical disciplines, or the appropriation of this concept by the field of architecture throughout the 20th century, and the approach to ideas of space initiated by visual artists suggests pressing topics, such as questions of gender and identity, social alienation in contemporary urban contexts, or revisiting complex historical memories based on installations, painting, sculpture and videos.
