The exhibition Welcome to Fear City putted together a selection of works of painting, drawing and video from João Fonte Santa’s most recent production, in which the artist conveys visual representations of the state of the world, expressing a playful and critical observation about the current social, political and cultural scene.
In this new exhibition project, João Fonte Santa (b. 1965) worked on the political and philosophical meanings of fear, on the deterritorialisation processes caused by war, on the permanent conflict and instability, as well as the continuous surveillance and control which permeate modern life. He used images circulated in newspapers, TV and the Internet, and make associations with other areas, namely popular culture, through aesthetical narratives, visions and atmospheres inspired in 19th-century literature, B movies and fringe pop music.
