João Pimenta Gomes presents Poly-Free, a new sound installation, at Gabinete.
In his artistic practice, João Pimenta Gomes combines music, video and photography and interlinks music-related references. In Poly-Free, he explores the relationships between space and music and between recording, composing, and reproducing, emphasising the latter as a key element in his work. Pimenta Gomes revives the idea of the physical sound speaker, embodying it through an object – created in collaboration with ArtWorks – to which he adds a sound composition produced by manipulating modular synthesizers and using the human voice as the main sound source. The artist has created a new instrument he calls Metavox, a modular synthesizer designed to play only human voice samples. During performances, he explores the instrument’s possibilities and its multiple variations in the space, which transform the piece into a new composition every time it is activated.
