The importance of working with our hands to attend to our daily needs is manifested in a primordial way throughout Ernesto Neto’s work. His huge immersive exhibition-installation features mesh-wrapped drums of different types and provenances that invite you to touch them – something usually prohibited in museums. The artist sees embroidery, sewing, cooking and playing as fundamental ways of experiencing the world. He learned to crochet at his grandmother’s house, among a community of women – a predominantly female setting. Other activities included painting porcelain and cooking.
As part of World Grandparents Day, we are inviting grandparents and their grandchildren to take part in a workshop inspired by the artist’s work Our Boat Drum Earth. The event is intended to encourage participants to use their hands as a creative resource, through sewing and baking. This workshop puts all five senses to the test and stimulates them in different ways: we can see, smell, touch, hear and even eat. What can we learn from our grandparents? And what can they learn from us? The aim is for us all to learn as a team.
