The importance of working with our hands to attend to our daily needs is manifested in a primordial way throughout Ernesto Neto’s work. His huge immersive exhibition-installation features mesh-wrapped drums of different types and provenances that invite you to touch them – something usually prohibited in museums. The artist sees embroidery, sewing, cooking and playing as fundamental ways of experiencing the world. He learned to crochet at his grandmother’s house, among a community of women – a predominantly female setting. Other activities included painting porcelain and cooking. The title of this workshop, Sewing and Baking - In my grandmother's atelier, is inspired by the artist's relationship with his grandmother, from whom he learnt the crochet technique so present in his work. It is aimed at all grandmothers and grandfathers who want to share special moments with their grandchildren.
