How does a museum of contemporary art, architecture and technology work? How is an exhibition organised? Do works of art enter through one door and the public through another? Where did this work come from, and where does it go after the exhibition?
Based on a visit to the building and the exhibitions currently on display, we will explore how a contemporary art museum works through the characteristics and particularities of MAAT. Topics will include how works of art circulate, how they are preserved, how they are assembled/transported, and other processes and challenges involved; the creation, assembly and maintenance of exhibitions; the relationship between the museum's architecture and the artworks; and the particularities and requirements of the contemporary works on display and of artists processes. It also includes stories of collections, and the roles of the curator and other people who work in the museum.
The content of the How does this museum work? visit is adapted to the profile of participants and is available for schools, groups and specialists alike. For primary schoolchildren (1st to 3rd cycle), the visit takes an approach of contextualising the MAAT and how it works, presenting interesting facts about the works/exhibitions/collections/artists on display. In the case of young people and adults, secondary and university students, and non-specialists, the visit will also provide more technical and detailed information on the subject.
