Menino da Mãe + Backing Vocalists

A true UFO capable of encapsulating in its music all the tensions, pluralities and potential of the present time, Menino da Mãe defines himself in the “rage of a child from the suburbs who died in the capital”. Although we rarely quote the descriptions provided by the artists themselves, it is difficult to resist such honesty and, above all, acuity in his self-portrait. The music of Bernardo Bertrand AKA Menino da Mãe [Mama's Boy] ranges, almost literally, to all that is anguish, contemplative beauty, and hedonistic celebration, often in the space of seconds. It is electronic but organic, it is punk but new age, it is noise but filigree pop.

In anticipation of the new album Há entre nós quem vive num museu à escala de aldeia que é Portugal, Menino da Mãe comes to maat accompanied by his accomplices in this new music, Raphael Soares and Violeta Azevedo, drummer and flautist, respectively, both figures of exceptional output, originality, and dedication in the recent Portuguese scene, as well as backing vocalists Alexandra Vidal and Ness. We know that the album has three long themes, one of which is about a hairdresser from the south bank of Lisbon who robbed 11 banks with plastic guns to feed her children after a painful divorce. Need we say more?

Bernardo Bertrand: vocals, electronics
Violeta Azevedo: flute, electronics
Raphael Soares: drums
Alexandra Vidal and Ness: backing vocals

Menino da Mãe special guest: Ricardo Martins – percussion

Rescaldo returns to Lisbon, one of the privileged events since 2007 to feel the creative pulse of the country in everything that is unclassifiable and challenging. In its thirteenth edition, for five days (15/0219/02/2023), the festival will take over as many other spaces in the capital city, with performances that faithfully mirror the diversity of sound venues in its programme. From contemporary academic composition to self-taught experimentation, from jazz to electronic dance music, including unimaginable mixtures and unique collaborations exclusively conceived for the festival, Rescaldo continues to affirm the aesthetic, social, and generational diversity that keeps alive the personal and collective miracle of making, thinking, feeling, and exploring sound in its infinite possibilities.
