Masterclass on Neutral and Inclusive Language
In partnership with Acesso Cultura

Are the “new” language requirements actually that new? When did we start to think about them and to rethink how we choose the words we use to refer to the people around us – and sometimes even to talk about ourselves?
This masterclass will open the doors for a dynamic and practical discussion and reflection on ideas and resources we want to make more friendly and inclusive, helping us to: 1) understand the impacts of the language we use and the way we express ourselves, showing their cultural and hegemonic dominance; 2) recognise the importance of good practices in the use of neutral and inclusive language, especially for social minorities (particularly in terms of gender inclusivity and transgender equality, functional diversity, and non-dominant ethno-cultural groups); 3) reflect on implicit prejudices, stereotypes, multiple discrimination, intersectionality, and microaggressions as forms of exclusion; 4) put neutral and inclusive language into practice, committing to promote more inclusive and safer spaces for everyone, and not consciously excluding anyone.

Andreo Gustavo recently created TransParente, a project promoting respect for and inclusion of sexual and gender diversity. He is currently a Consultant on that topic for the United Nations Organisation, at UNICEF. He holds a Master’s Degree in Humanitarian Action, Cooperation and Development and has dedicated his personal and professional life to the protection of rights of trans, non-binary, and gender diverse people. Andreo Gustavo also has Advanced training in Gender Diversity, Gender Equality, Non-Formal Education for Queer Awareness (LGBTQIAP+) and Effective Project Management.

Sara Martinho is a social psychologist and facilitator in non-formal education with a strong interest in social intervention, activism and policy analysis in human rights, microaggressions, discrimination, prejudice, gender, LGBTI, bullying, functional diversity, and animal rights. She has been a trainer and has given seminars on these topics for twenty years. She is part of the coordination of the research group Health 4 All at the Centre for Research and Social Intervention at ISCTE-IUL and is currently completing her PhD in Psychology in Microaggressions in Health. She was founder and leader of the ex aequo network – association of young lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans, intersex, and supporters, where she coordinated the Inclusion Project, the first campaign against homophobic bullying in Portugal, and headed the ILGA Portugal association.
