On this guided visit with João Pinharanda, director of MAAT, we invite you to take a poetic dive into the underwater world of the French artist Nicolas Floc'h, who makes the sea the centre of his research and discoveries of artistic imagery.
This photography, sculpture, and video exhibition is the result of an invitation from MAAT to the artist to research the Tagus estuary. The works on display are partly (but not exclusively) the product of this research, for which Floc'h made 34 dives at different depths along a 95 km stretch of the Tagus between Castanheira do Ribatejo and Bugio. The result opens up unexpected paths in the field of colour, including a fascinating set of 408 monochrome photographs arranged in a grid in the large mural The Colour of Water – The Tagus River.
The surprising contrast between the diverse colour scale of the river's waters and the dramatic black and white images of the seabed transforms the visitor's experience as they travel through a multiplicity of temporal and geographical spaces in a striking aesthetic journey.
In the words of João Pinharanda, who curated the exhibition, "Floc'h doesn't present his work as an explicit climate manifesto, but as a whole (...), it leads us to an ecological awareness. The mysterious and disquieting beauty of his images and his obsessive recording method are a powerful testament to the artist's conscious attention of the delicate balance of marine ecosystems and of how we should relate to these both objectively and poetically.”
