MAAT + ATLÉTICO Project

The MAAT + Atlético project brings together artistic culture and sporting culture at Tapadinha Stadium. Stadiums are places of immense symbolic value and, by opening them to the public beyond match days, art can transform them into lasting cultural destinations. By creating space for dialogue between these two worlds, the project highlights its civic dimension.

The works presented here help keep public attention focused on the places people use and inhabit, while attracting and engaging new audiences. Artists from a range of backgrounds establish both a real and symbolic relationship with Tapadinha Stadium, with Atlético Clube de Portugal — a club with a long-standing history at the venue — as well as with its supporters and the wider local and sporting community, bringing together art, sport, and community.

New materials, new colours, and new images visually transform the space, intertwining art and sport while forging a strong connection with the neighbourhood and the city. In doing so, they establish the club and its stadium as distinctive urban landmarks.

The artists selected for this first series of installations share a practice centred on materiality, memory and contemporary identity, bringing together a range of artistic languages that engage with the urban, the symbolic and the sensorial. Their works have the capacity to activate the stadium space and engage diverse audiences, combining monumental and widely accessible interventions with more intimate and contemplative proposals.

Together, they help transform the stadium into a vibrant, accessible and inclusive place, establishing it as a genuine social and cultural meeting point for the community.

An opportunity for emerging artists

Inspired by the EDP Foundation's Public Art programme, this Open Call invites artists to create a permanent artistic intervention at Tapadinha Stadium, in dialogue with the history and community of Alcântara.

Artistic excellence

An original and innovative creative proposal within the national and international context.

Community engagement

An emotional, historical or aesthetic connection with the neighbourhood of Alcântara.

Enduring public art

A permanent artwork with visibility, embedded in the life of the club and the neighbourhood.

Space for intervention

The main access tunnel is one of the principal links between the stadium entrance and Atlético Clube de Portugal's pitch.

It is a longitudinal circulation space, defined by continuous walls, with several elements to consider, including an office access door and a gate.

Measuring 10 metres in length and 3.40 metres in width, the corridor is open at both ends, allowing a direct visual connection between the stadium's exterior and interior.

Public programmes

On the walls of a place that carries decades of stories, encounters and emotions, we affirm the importance of creating spaces for listening — spaces where art meets the neighbourhood, those who live on its streets and those who occupy its stands.

This dialogue stems from a desire to build lasting relationships, recognising the specific sensibilities of each community, the microcultures that have taken root here, and the different ways in which people inhabit this territory.

At the same time, we seek to bring new communities into this space, fostering encounters between people, practices and distinct fields of knowledge.

The Public Programmes project is built around four core objectives:

Reinforce the idea of the stadium as a meeting place for art, community and collective memory.
Develop participatory, inclusive and intergenerational cultural mediation practices.
Foster cultural participation through accessible and multidisciplinary programmes.
Promote well-being and social representation through art, listening and community engagement.
