MAAT is offering two guided tours led by curators Sérgio Mah and João Pinharanda, inviting the public to explore Anna Maria Maiolino’s exhibition Poetic Earth, in greater depth.
Anna Maria Maiolino has forged an artistic career spanning multiple media, from drawing to performance. The exhibition brings together works from the 1970s and 1980s — drawings and photographs — in dialogue with clay sculptures produced especially for this presentation, modelled within the exhibition space itself.
The body, language, desire and subjectivity are treated as territories of experimentation, where the personal merges with the political and the intimate opens up to the collective. The experience of migration – from southern Italy to Venezuela – plays a central role in his artistic research, shaping a way of thinking attentive to issues of identity, belonging and memory, not unrelated to the need to take clear stances in the face of the political context of the military dictatorship established in Brazil from 1964 onwards.
