Text

Reflecting on the historical context that underpins the exhibition Margarida Correia – Mais Alto – the individual and collective history of a group of Portuguese army paratrooper nurses who served in Africa during the 1960s and 1970s –, this session brings together one of the nurses from that group, Cristina Justino; historian Irene Flunser Pimentel, who contributes an essay to the exhibition catalogue; and researcher Filipa Caetano, guided by the artist Margarida Correia and the exhibition’s curator, João Pinharanda.

In this conversation on art, history and memory, experiences and perspectives intersect in an informal setting, creating a meeting point between narratives and generations through the sharing of diverse knowledge.

The discussion will also include a short visit to the exhibition, in a moment that also marks International Museum Day (18 May) and International Nurses Day (13 May).

For 10 years, she served at the Military Hospital of Terra Chã (Terceira Island, Azores), as well as in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea, providing care to war casualties in combat zones and accompanying medical evacuations to Lisbon.
In early 1973, on the eve of being placed on reserve, during her final evacuation mission between Nangololo and Mueda (Northern Mozambique), she was struck by a bullet to the head.
After completing her military service, she continued her nursing career at Hospital Particular de Lisboa, where she later headed the emergency department.
