NOTICE
Due to the declared state of calamity and the high risk of flooding in the riverside areas, MAAT is temporarily closed to ensure the safety of all visitors. Consequently, the Cuida’Arte session scheduled for 7 February has been cancelled.
Sharing Sessions for People with Dementia and Caregivers are aimed at people with dementia and their carers, creating a visiting environment that prioritises calm, presence and attention at each participant's own pace. These sessions take their cue from the exhibitions at the MAAT Gallery and MAAT Central to explore art in a sensory and accessible way, through observation, conversation and small activities that encourage participation.
The main objective is to provide an experience of encounter and well-being. More than understanding the works, the aim is to create time and space for each person to engage with what they see and with the group accompanying them. This approach is in line with contemporary practices that recognise the role of museums as places of support, where art can contribute to moments of comfort, recognition and connection between those living with dementia and their carers.
Held on the first and third Saturday of each month, and despite being open to all and non-sequential, the sessions offer continuity and familiarity, reinforcing the relationship with the museum and the sense of belonging. These are meetings designed to be welcoming, to encourage listening, and to create meaningful relationships through art.
The programmes developed by MAAT for people with dementia and their carers rely on Alzheimer Portugal as a scientific evaluation partner.
