MAAT presents a contemporary dance programme as part of the 2025 edition of the CUMPLICIDADES Festival, curated by Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz. The performance will take place on 10 and 11 May at the exhibitions Jeff Wall -Time Stands Still. Photographs, 1980-2023Rui Moreira - Transe and Ana Léon - Gestos

This festival, organised by EIRA since 2015, fully celebrates dance crossing partners, disciplines, formats and audiences, by presenting participatory and collaborative models of action over three weeks: shows and performances indoors and outdoors, installations, talks, among others.

The performance presented at MAAT is made up of seven short dance moments, scattered around the museum's spaces and based on the relationship with the works on display.

The seven performance moments are the result of research and creative work between the performing arts artists and a group of neuroscientists from the Champalimaud Foundation's Bridges to the Unknown Programme.

This is a unique opportunity that combines art and science and seeks to expand possibilities for thinking and creating about gesture, movement, mental and bodily states in artistic creation and performance. This project with the Champalimaud Foundation is mediated by playwright Alex Cassal.

On 11 May, in addition to the performance, the public will be able to take part in two complementary programmes: a speed dating conversation with the artists and the neuroscientists taking part in the project, and the interactive installation Impermanent Map, by Lucas Damiani. A performer and photographer, the artist was challenged to integrate the documentary material of the performances as they are presented at the Festival, reconfiguring it and inviting the audience to establish new connections between works and artists, in a collective exercise of festival dramaturgy.

Beatriz Ferreira Belbut is pursuing a PhD in Neuroscience at the Champalimaud Centre, focusing on how visual context influences the neural mechanisms of perception. She holds a Master’s degree in Physical Engineering from IST, University of Lisbon. Her research investigates whether plastic adaptation or innate mechanisms drive visual processing. During her Master’s studies, she worked in Particle Physics and Neuroscience, collaborating on various projects at the Cortical Circuits Laboratory. Beatriz is also actively involved in science communication and educational initiatives.

Caroline Haimerl is a postdoctoral researcher at the Champalimaud Centre, focusing on how interactions with the world shape cognitive processes. She holds a degree in Statistics and Psychology and earned a PhD in Computational Neuroscience from NYU. She developed a theory on how the brain modulates visual processing to optimize decision-making. Currently, she investigates how complex behaviors emerge from hierarchical structures in neural circuits, using reinforcement learning models. Caroline is also passionate about dance, exploring the intersection of art, body, and science.

Jaime Arlandis is completing a PhD in Neuroscience at the Champalimaud Centre, focusing on the effects of hallucinogenic substances in rats. During his PhD, he worked with computational tools to compare mental representations and explored the relationship between spatial representations and serotonin. He also developed an interest in hypnosis, investigating the interface between philosophy and behavioral neuroscience. Beyond science, Jaime is passionate about photography, performance, and other forms of art.

He has recently demonstrated the necessity of an adjustable neural signal for cerebellar learning. Jorge has also collaborated on publications exploring the intersections of art, biology, and narrative.

Tatiana Almeida Silva is a postdoctoral researcher at the Champalimaud Centre, studying how changes in behavioral state, such as movement activation, affect motor memory consolidation. During her PhD, she investigated the neural mechanisms of motor learning and memory in the cerebellum. Her research focuses on the interaction between brain plasticity, neural circuits, and behavior. She is particularly interested in how behavioral state modulations influence learning and memory. Tatiana also applies this knowledge to the development of behavioral therapies.
