When MAAT closes, a new world opens for MAAT Friends

On the last Wednesday of each month, MAAT opens its doors exclusively to MAAT Friends for one hour after closing to the public. MAAT Friends After Hours offers in‑depth guided tours, exploring exhibitions in detail in an intimate setting. It is a moment for discovery, exchange and connection with the artworks, the space and the people who share this unique experience.

The next MAAT Friends After Hours session will take place on 27 May at 19:00.
In this edition, participants will enjoy an after-hours guided tour of the two exhibitions currently on view at MAAT Gallery: Manuel João Vieira – The Purple Island: Notes and Landscapes, recently opened, and Anna Maria Maiolino – Poetic Earth, which has received very positive responses from both the public and critics, earning a five-star review from the newspaper Público.

The visit is limited to the first 30 participants to confirm their attendance. MAAT Friend +1 cardholders may bring one guest free of charge.

About the exhibitions to visit

Manuel João Vieira – The Purple Island: Notes and Landscapes

Portuguese artist Manuel João Vieira (Lisbon, 1962), whose practice extends to music and civic intervention – often marked by a satirical and performative dimension – presents at MAAT a group of paintings and drawings, including large-scale works, in which he constructs dense and imaginative fictional worlds populated by figures, symbols and references to art history, literature and mythology. The exhibition also includes a series of satirical sculptures that expand the artist’s narrative field. It is as a painter that he asserts himself here, through a figurative language marked by irony and humour, bringing together different times and imaginaries in complex and unexpected “landscapes” that invite multiple interpretations.

Anna Maria Maiolino – Poetic Earth

Italian-Brazilian artist Anna Maria Maiolino (Italy, 1942) presents at MAAT a major exhibition that brings together drawing, photography, video and clay sculpture created in situ. Known for her sensory exploration of materials and her dialogue between gesture, body and language, Maiolino has created for this exhibition a series of new works – the largest clay sculptures she has ever produced – which occupy the Oval Gallery in a deeply immersive environment. Poetic Earth proposes a direct encounter with materiality, time and memory, inviting visitors into an intimate, tactile and poetic experience.
