Central Tejo Carpentry Workshop, 1936-2013 presents a collection of tools including workbenches, clamps, saws, planes, branding irons, chisels, hammers and nails that form part of the history of Central Tejo, more specifically of its old carpentry workshop. These tools evoke the intensity of daily life in the electricity factory and bear witness to the importance of human labour and industrial power in the construction of modernity.
The carpentry was built in 1936 in one of the Central Tejo’s industrial buildings, remaining in use until 1972, when the plant ceased operations.
In the summer of 2001, an exhibition titled Apresentação was held in this space, a project that marked the beginning of EDP Foundation's direct engagement with contemporary art (under the auspices of the then Installation Committee). Artists invited to participate in the exhibition included Ana Jotta, Fernanda Fragateiro, João Pedro Vale, Leonor Antunes, and Noé Sendas. Other exhibitions in this space followed, including Medley, part of the first EDP Foundation New Artists Award, awarded to Joana Vasconcelos, the photography exhibition by Luís Campos Aldeia da Luz, and Patrícia Garrido’s installation Tectos Falsos.
This is the site where MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology stands today.
This is the third in a series of exhibitions entitled Light Everywhere, inspired by a 1940s advertising slogan and dedicated to showcasing objects and archival material from the EDP Foundation’s historical collections, preserved and studied by the teams at the EDP Foundation Energy Heritage Collection Documentation Centre and Storage.
