On the eve of the opening of Miriam Cahn - O que nos olha?/ What looks at us? the artist and curators João Pinharanda and Sérgio Mah talk about the exhibition and Cahn's work, from the various exploratory media and processes presented and used in her practice – such as painting, drawing, photography, performance or installation –, as well as her strong thematic and discursive imagery.
Associated with the ideas, motivations, and attitudes that shaped the feminist movements of the 1970s and 1980s, Cahn’s work centers on the body as a powerful site of exploration, investigating physical, mental and emotional aspects through highly idiosyncratic and subjective visual imaginaries, questioning conventions surrounding gender, physicality, desire and violence.
The exhibition at MAAT, which features around 100 works, focuses mainly on her most recent production, particularly her paintings and drawings, and resulted from a collaboration with Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and following important monographic exhibitions at Palais Tokyo (Paris), Museo Reina Sofia (Madrid) and Haus Der Kunst (Munich).
After the talk, there will be a short visit to the exhibition, which opens to the public on 26 June.
